You may be tempted to spray pesticides, insecticides and herbicides as the growing season gets underway, but remember:
The disadvantages of widespread pesticide use are very significant. They include domestic animal contaminations and deaths, loss of natural antagonists to pests, pesticide resistance, honey bee and pollination decline, losses to adjacent crops, fishery and bird losses and contamination of groundwater. And breathing the mist of these products in can cause serious health issues.
Help to save our soil and planet, and simply don't spray them. Lots of pests can be encouraged to move along with a good spray of water underneath the leaves, using a hose. Read the damage these products can do in store before you buy - it is written in very fine print at the back of the containers. But it is scary stuff...and then decide.
Thanks Fingal County Council, who agreed from 2019/2020 onwards, not to use herbicides in Castleknock.
