Auburn Avenue Age Friendly Walking Loop

Fingal County Council are delighted to announce the launch of our first age friendly walking loop in partnership with Castleknock Tidy Towns. The walking loop is located just off Auburn Avenue and is marked by information signs at each entrance.
What is an Age Friendly Walking Loop?
An age friendly walking loop is one that promotes active, independent and socially connected lifestyles. The routes are marked with information signs that give details about the length, facilities and surface type that people can find along the route.
The aim of an age friendly walking loop is to remove some of the common barriers to walking that are experienced by older adults. We have linked the concept closely to the Fingal County Council Age Friendly Strategy 2026 – 2030, The World Health Organisation Age Friendly Cities Framework and the National Age Friendly Strategy.
We have designed the Age Friendly Walking Loops focusing on the four core thematic areas of our Age Friendly Strategy:
Health and Wellbeing
Safe and Attractive Neighbourhoods
Mobility and Accessibility
Information and Participation
Under the key principles:
Safe & Accessible
Even & step free access with good lighting and sightlines
Promote comfort and rest
Regular rest points, cover where possible with shade and greenery
Clear Wayfinding
Marked starting points, distance guidelines and a loop design (start and finish in same location where possible)
Health & Wellbeing
Promotes regular physical activity, better health and improved mental wellbeing
Social Connection
An informal gathering location meet neighbours, friends and family and reduce the chances of social isolation as we age
Community Focused
Located in the heart of the community where possible, close to services and in familiar surroundings
Age Friendly Walking Loops are more than just a path; they are public spaces that are designed to support independence and quality of life as people age.
